Help every student succeed this year with Operation Backpack.
Operation Backpack is now collecting new school supplies and financial contributions to ensure every student in Durham has what they need to learn next school year.
“Every child deserves to walk into their classroom on the first day of school feeling prepared, included and ready to succeed,” said an Operation Backpack spokesperson in a release. “For families facing financial pressures, purchasing school supplies can be one more difficult choice in an already challenging time.
“Operation Backpack allows our community to come together and show students that they matter, that they are supported and that their success is important to all of us.”
Multiple local organizations have partnered on the initiative, including Durham Children’s Aid Society, Durham Community Health Centre, Ignite Durham Learning Foundation, Simcoe Hall Settlement House, St. Andrew’s Community Food Bank, and United Way of Durham Region.
Last year, the program collected more than 6,000 backpacks for students across the region. Organizers are aiming to fill another 6,000 backpacks this year and are asking the public for help.
Residents can help by:
Donating new school supplies.
Hosting a workplace, school or faith-based school supply drive.
Becoming a community drop-off location.
Making a financial donation to help purchase supplies.
Attending the stuff-a-bus event at Staples Oshawa on July 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Drop off locations include Oshawa Public Library branches, Durham District School Board headquarters in Whitby, Simcoe Hall Settlement House and St. Andrew’s Community Food Bank.
